Amazon Enters the 4PL Space: How Big of a Threat is the Global Freight Industry Facing?

On May 4, Amazon officially launched "Amazon Supply Chain Services." The rollout of this asset-heavy fourth-party logistics (4PL) solution immediately triggered a sharp sell-off across the entire freight market. Nevertheless, analysts at Bernstein are raising major questions about whether the market's reaction has overblown the actual risks.
A Massive, Automated Logistics Engine
Essentially, this new service layers automated decision-making processes over the immense logistics capacity Amazon has painstakingly built over the years. This network boasts massive assets, including over 80,000 trailers, 24,000 containers, and more than 100 cargo planes.
Amazon combines third-party ocean, air, and less-than-truckload (LTL) freight services with its internal warehousing, fulfillment, and final-mile delivery network, marketed as a form of excess capacity.
To attract customers, Amazon is rolling out discounts on its existing services—including Amazon Global Logistics, Seller Export & Delivery, and Amazon Warehousing & Distribution—for shippers who sign up and allow Amazon to automate inventory replenishment and storage decisions.
Shockwaves Across Freight Stocks
As soon as the news broke, UPS and FedEx were the two "giants" that bore the heaviest market pressure. UPS stock, already down 17.4% against the S&P 500, is currently trading at $107.57 compared to Bernstein's $130 price target. FedEx, rated "outperform" with a $470 target, is trading at $393.67.
The appearance of pioneer customers like P&G and 3M during the service's launch further rattled the market. This is a notable detail because these conglomerates operate entirely outside of Amazon's traditional e-commerce ecosystem.
Beyond express delivery, the stocks of trucking companies (including both full truckload and LTL), along with freight forwarder Expeditors International, also tumbled simultaneously. This reflects market fears that Amazon is opening up its logistics network to all independent shippers.
Analysts: "The Market is Overreacting"
Despite the sea of red, Bernstein analysts have pushed back against this pessimistic sentiment. The team of experts asserted that the knee-jerk reaction in UPS and FedEx stocks is "overdone."
"The definition of a supply chain service is inherently broad, anything involving Amazon is inherently bad, and we think the market is reading this announcement as very broad and very bad," Bernstein analysts observed.
For the large-scale enterprise customer segment, Bernstein believes Amazon's bundled service model will struggle to gain traction because: "budgets are too large, and corporate requirements are too specific." Furthermore, the cost of a pre-packaged solution will often exceed the cost of a purpose-built, highly specialized supply chain.
Analysts also point out a potential structural conflict in this model: Amazon is both an asset owner and a buyer of its own services—creating an agency risk for any shipper ceding control of its logistics.
To clarify the limits of the new service, Bernstein compared it to the success of Amazon Web Services (AWS): "scaling a data center is different from scaling a logistics network, where business processes are not as standardized, capacity is not as freely available."
Assessing Impact by Segment
Across the freight sector, Bernstein assesses that the LTL segment will be more resilient than full truckload, and rail is the least affected segment. The most significant mispricing in stocks following this event belongs to the intermodal group, specifically JBHT and Canadian Pacific, closely followed by freight forwarders.
As for Amazon itself, its stock (rated "outperform" with a $315 price target) is trading at $268.26, outperforming the S&P 500 by 12.2%. According to estimates, the company's 2026 EPS (Earnings Per Share) sits at $8.78 and is projected to rise to $11.12 in 2027.
