Container throughput of Chinese ports to increase by 7.6% in 2021

In terms of cargo volume, Chinese ports have reached 14,207.6 million tons, up 7.2% year-on-year, according to China's Ministry of Transport.

The chart below shows container throughput and cargo volume data for eight major ports in China, for the January-November 2021 period.

In which, Dalian port had the largest decrease year-on-year at 34%, while this port had the largest growth in container throughput in the corresponding period of 2020, up to 18.6%.

In terms of container freight rates, the average value of the Ningbo Container Freight Index (NCFI) in December was 4,104.3 points, a slight increase of 3.3% month-on-month.

However, this represents a 95.7% jump over December 2020, as seen below.

From Ningbo to North America, supply and demand fundamentals have tightened, most sailings are full, and market freight rates remain high.

The average freight rates of 40'GP containers from the Ningbo port to the port of Los Angeles and New York in December were USD 7,676 and USD 9,278 respectively, up 3.2% and 4.9% month on month.

The biggest month-on-month NCFI increase in December, observed in Ningbo trade with Singapore and Malaysia, amounted to more than 54.5% from November, at 4,203.8 points.

Meanwhile, the biggest month-on-month decline in the Ningbo Container Freight Index, the Ningbo to South Africa route, fell 7.43% at 5,776.7 points.

In terms of year-to-year figures, the value of the Ningbo Container Shipping Index (NCFI) has increased by more than 100% in most cases, with the largest growth of 127.1% in the trade with North Africa, and a smaller increase, close to 24.6%, in the trade with West Africa.
