COSCO SHIPPING has focused on building a maritime technology enterprise, integrating technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT), to adapt to new technological and industrial trends.

COSCO SHIPPING's IoT technology was initially applied to refrigerated containers, which have strict requirements on temperature and time.

Equipped with the IBOX REEFER smart solution, traditional refrigerated containers have become smarter by adding real-time remote temperature control, location monitoring and door opening/closing status, as well as two-way communication, improving the safety and control of refrigerated cargo.

To extend the shelf life of sensitive fresh goods such as certain fruits, vegetables, flowers or mushrooms, COSCO SHIPPING also provides air-conditioned containers and cold-treatment services according to standardized procedures.

Currently, the shipping company owns more than 100,000 refrigerated containers equipped with third-generation IoT technology, along with dry containers that can meet the needs of transporting special or dangerous goods.

With IBOX DRY, COSCO SHIPPING ensures that the temperature inside the container is always maintained at 15-25 degrees Celsius, while remotely monitoring various conditions of the goods and receiving warnings when there are abnormalities, enhancing safety during the journey at sea.

When the ship is moving at sea, losing the communication signal can break the chain of real-time remote monitoring.

To ensure 24/7 monitoring, COSCO SHIPPING has developed the IBOX-VESSEL smart monitoring solution, which enables real-time data transmission from containers to the deck office and the IBOX cloud platform, allowing carriers and shippers to monitor the status of reefer containers through the IBOX application platform.

To ensure communication from the ship to the supply chain, COSCO SHIPPING uses integrated space-air network, geo-fencing and IoT technology to support resource planning and container logistics management, and provide strong support for route optimization.

In June, the Port of Aberdeen invested £1 million (US$1.27 million) in new technology to improve safety, connectivity and sustainability in its partnership with North.

More recently, COSCO SHIPPING Lines partnered with BOE Technology Group to issue the first blockchain-certified Hi-ECO green shipping certificate.
