Hapag-Lloyd Implements $500/TEU Peak Season Surcharge on Asia and Oceania to South Africa Trades

Hapag-Lloyd has issued a customer advisory regarding the implementation of a Peak Season Surcharge (PSS) on cargo moving from Asia and Oceania to South Africa's two premier container gateways, Durban and Cape Town. The cost adjustment is scheduled to take effect in early November 2026.
Geographic Scope and Surcharge Quantum
According to Hapag-Lloyd’s tariff circular, the PSS quantum is fixed at USD 500 per TEU, applicable across all equipment types (including standard dry containers and specialized equipment).
In terms of geographical coverage, the surcharge applies to export cargo originating from China, South Korea, Japan, Southeast Asia, and Oceania. The designated discharge destinations subject to this surcharge are Durban and Cape Town in South Africa.
Effective Date and Operational Guidance for Shippers
Hapag-Lloyd noted that the surcharge implementation strictly hinges on the actual vessel load date (on-board date). Consequently, any consignment laden on board vessels on or after November 3, 2026, will be subject to the USD 500/TEU levy.
The carrier stated that this PSS will remain in effect until further notice. Shippers, beneficial cargo owners (BCOs), and freight forwarders managing export volumes out of the affected origin markets - particularly shipments moving along the Southeast Asia to South Africa trade corridor - are advised to incorporate this updated surcharge structure immediately to safeguard landed cost budgeting and optimize upcoming booking schedules.
