OOCL warns of fake email and website activities to scam money transfer

OOCL (Orient Overseas Container Line) announced that it has recently observed an increase in fraudulent activities and has warned that scammers can hack email accounts and use any means possible to cheat victims to make remittances.

"Fraudsters can attempt to defraud remittances through the unauthorised use of the OOCL name via email correspondences, informing the victim to change the payment receiving bank account number to one owned by the fraudster," the company explained in its announcement.

Fake Emails

E-mails appear to be sent from OOCL employees however they are sent by unauthorized persons from various suspicious email addresses.

"This is a trap and everyone must take every precaution to avoid becoming a victim," OOCL points out, encouraging its customers to call its local representative to verify in the event they receive any email regarding bank account change.

Fake website

"The unsolicited or fraudulent email message may encourage you to click a hyperlink to launch a website. If you are in doubt of the integrity of a website that uses the OOCL name, please always access the OOCL website at https://www.oocl.com by typing out the whole URL on your web browser instead of clicking on the hyperlink provided to you."

OOCL offered the following advice to its clients:

- Contact OOCL directly by reliable means, such as a known email address and phone number. Dual verification methods provide better security.

- Don't rush or be pressured to make a decision

- Report suspicious signs of fraud - please report any fraudulent or suspicious emails you receive to OOCL Customer Service via your usual contact.

- Please note that all genuine correspondence from OOCL will come from the @oocl.com domain. Please contact your carrier's customer service representative to verify the suspect email.

"We would like to remind you to stay vigilant to protect yourself from any potential financial loss and cyber risk," OOCL, a COSCO-affiliated container carrier, said in its announcement.
