Amazon Accelerates 'Greening' of Grocery Supply Chain: AI Cuts Carbon Emissions by 15%

Amazon has achieved a significant reduction in energy usage - nearly 15% - at its grocery fulfillment centers. This achievement stems from a pilot program across three facilities in partnership with climate tech company Trane Technologies, according to a press release dated December 1.

Specifically, the e-commerce titan deployed Trane Technologies' BrainBox AI tool, combined with Amazon Web Services (AWS), at three grocery fulfillment centers in North America. The BrainBox system utilizes Artificial Intelligence (AI) to autonomously adjust temperature and ventilation systems, thereby reducing energy consumption and carbon emissions.

Following the successful pilot phase, Amazon is now planning to roll out this platform to more than 30 additional facilities within its U.S. grocery distribution and fulfillment network, with plans to install the tool in stores by 2026.

Aligning Logistics and Sustainability Goals

Amazon is leveraging new technology to support its deeper expansion into the grocery sector while simultaneously pursuing its established sustainability targets.

Christina Minardi, Vice President of Global Real Estate and Grocery Store Development at Amazon, stated in the release: “At Amazon, we’re continually looking for data-driven, scalable solutions to reduce our carbon footprint while maintaining operational excellence.”

According to the company's website, Amazon aims to achieve carbon neutrality across its operations by 2040. However, its most recent sustainability report indicated that carbon emissions rose by 6% in 2024, following a recorded 3% reduction in 2023.

Minardi continued to elaborate on the value of the technology: “By working with Trane Technologies and the BrainBox AI team, we’re turning our buildings into intelligent systems that learn and adapt, helping us meet both our sustainability and performance goals in real time.”

Parallel to its sustainability efforts, the company is also piloting the use of an in-store micro-fulfillment center located directly inside a Whole Foods Market store in Plymouth Meeting, Pennsylvania. This move further strengthens the integration between Amazon’s broader e-commerce arm and its grocery operations.

Additionally, Amazon is leveraging its logistics network to offer more grocery shipping options to shoppers, including the expansion of same-day delivery for perishable items to over 1,000 cities and towns earlier this year.
