Blank sailings reduce China's export container volume

Export container volume decreased by 9.4% while domestic container volume also decreased by 0.9%. More than 20% of services between Asia and North America were temporarily suspended during September and October as shipping lines tried to prevent immediate reductions in freight rates, as well as manage capacity during the Golden Week Holiday of China in early October.

Cargo throughput at major coastal ports increased by 8.1%. The international trade cargo throughput grew 2.5% while domestic volume up 24.44%.

Crude oil shipments at major coastal ports increased slightly by 0.3% over the same period last year. Volume growth at the port of Ningbo-Zhoushan and Rizhao exceeded 13%.

Metal ore shipments at at China's major ports increased 1.9% while the port inventory grew 12.95%.

Cargo throughput at the three Yangtze rivers of Nanjing, Wuhan and Chongqing fell 2.1% while container volume increased 1.4% year-on-year in early October.
