French container shipping company CMA CGM has informed customers that as of 1 February 2024 and until further notice, all services originally routed via the Red Sea route are now will go around the Cape of Good Hope.

“The safety of our seafarers remains our priority at all times,” the Marseille-based shipping company noted in a statement.

According to a Reuters report, the carrier made this decision because last week, Houthi attacks included targeting a convoy containing ships operated by CMA CGM.

CMA CGM is one of the few shipping lines still sending some ships, often supported by French naval escorts, through the Red Sea.

The escalating Red Sea crisis appears to be getting worse, with ongoing disruptions to global trade expected to persist.
