With the introduction of its first retrofit propeller into the port of Hamburg, Hapag-Lloyd is starting a comprehensive Fleet Upgrade Program that aims to modernize the engineering of the existing fleet.
The propeller, which has been optimized for energy efficiency by German manufacturer MMG, will be installed on Hapag-Lloyd's 7,500 TEU container ship, Ningbo Express, in Dubai in September.
In this way, the ship is expected to save about 10-13% in fuel and CO2 emissions, depending on seagoing conditions.
Hapag-Lloyd plans to equip at least 86 ships with new and more efficient propellers, while another 36 ships will be fitted with a new bulbous bow for greater efficiency.
Hapag-Lloyd also noted that, during the scheduled upgrade, a drag-reducing antifouling coating will also be applied to all ships below waterline.
Hapag-Lloyd aims to complete most of the measures by 2025. “We aim to be climate-neutral by 2045. To reach this goal, we have set ourselves the interim target of reducing the CO2 intensity of our own ships by 30% already by 2030. To do so, we are investing in new future-proof ships while simultaneously focusing on making our existing fleet fit for the future. The Fleet Upgrade Program will boost the energy efficiency of the entire fleet" Dr. Maximilian Rothkopf, COO of Hapag-Lloyd said.
The Hamburg-headquartered container shipping line says the Fleet Upgrade Program's investment will be in the hundreds of millions. In addition, Hapag-Lloyd has a €2 billion order for 12 LNG vessels placed two years ago. This large-scale solution shows that Hapag-Lloyd is seriously investing in sustainable and competitive vessel operations over the long term.
