Hapag-Lloyd Warns of Potential Transport Disruptions in Kenya Due to Heavy Rainfall

Port of Mombasa - Source: Kenya Ports Authority
Shipping line Hapag-Lloyd has issued a warning that heavy rainfall and potential localized flooding in Kenya between October and December 2026 could disrupt port operations and cargo transportation.
According to Hapag-Lloyd, no weather-related operational disruptions had been reported at the time of the warning. However, weather forecasts indicate that rainfall across much of Kenya could exceed seasonal averages during this period.
Potential Impact on Port Operations and Inland Transportation
Heavy rainfall and localized flooding could affect operations at the Port of Mombasa and complicate cargo movements between the port and inland destinations.
Potential risks include vessel operation delays, restricted port access and disruptions to container handling activities. Road and rail transportation could also be affected, particularly along the Northern Corridor and transit routes carrying cargo to Uganda.
If transportation services are disrupted, the collection of import cargo, delivery of export containers to the port and the return of empty containers could be delayed. The carrier also highlighted the risk of cargo damage from rainwater or moisture during stuffing, storage and transportation.
Recommendations for Customers and Shippers
To minimize the impact on shipping schedules, Hapag-Lloyd recommends that customers allow additional buffer time and make proactive arrangements for cargo collection and delivery.
Before stuffing, shippers should inspect containers for signs of damage, leaks or moisture. Any irregularities should be reported promptly to the relevant parties. Cargo should also be packed and protected appropriately to reduce the risk of damage from rainwater and moisture during stuffing, storage and transportation.
In addition, customers should regularly monitor vessel schedules and related operational deadlines, particularly the container gate-in cut-off time at the port. Coordinating with inland transport providers and customs clearance agents can also help stakeholders adjust their plans promptly if conditions change.
Hapag-Lloyd said it would continue monitoring weather developments and coordinating with port authorities, terminal operators and inland transport partners. The carrier will provide updates if significant operational disruptions occur.
