KMTC container ship caught fire off Malaysia

The 2,778 TEU container ship KMTC Shenzhen caught fire off Port Klang in Malaysia on August 12.

According to UK insurer WK Webster, the 2,778 TEU container ship KMTC Shenzhen caught fire off Port Klang in Malaysia on August 12.

Reportedly, at least three fire-fighting tugs were deployed to assist the fire incident, in conjunction with the local fire brigade, was brought under control within two hours.

The 2013 ship had 18 crew members and 1,189 containers on board, but no injuries were reported at the time of writing.

WK Webster said that nine containers located in the forward section of the ship are believed to have been affected by the fire. The company added: “Other cargo stowed in the vicinity of the fire may be affected by heat, smoke and/or wet damage as a consequence of the fire-fighting operation.”

The container ship appears to be operated by Taiwanese shipping company TS Lines.
