PIL officially starts construction of first 13,000 TEU dual-fuel LNG container ship

Pacific International Lines (PIL) has officially started construction of its first 13,000 TEU dual-fuel LNG and conventional oil container ship, marking an important milestone in the company's fleet renewal and carbon reduction strategy.

This is the first of a series of five new-generation vessels ordered by PIL from China’s renowned shipyard, Hudong Zhonghua Shipbuilding, in August 2024. Deliveries are expected to begin in phases from late 2026.

The new vessels are equipped with dual-fuel engines and auxiliary systems capable of operating on both liquefied natural gas (LNG) and low-sulphur fuel oil, thereby significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

The vessels will also incorporate the latest technological innovations and energy-saving solutions, including the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT) to automate tasks, thereby improving operational efficiency and enhancing crew safety.

“These vessels are a cornerstone of a long-term commitment to building a more sustainable and efficient fleet,” said Abhishek Chawla, Director of Marine Operations at PIL. In addition, PIL has also partnered with Hudong Zhonghua to build 10 advanced container ships as part of its ongoing fleet renewal program. The inauguration of Hudong Zhonghua’s new headquarters and expanded manufacturing facilities is a major step forward for the shipyard, and will provide a significant advantage to customers like PIL in executing large-scale projects that require precision and speed.
