Port of Antwerp-Bruges to reduce container throughput by 6.2% in the first 6 months of 2022

The Port of Antwerp-Bruges - Belgium's main port - transported 6.77 million TEUs, or 74.1 million tonnes, in the first six months of 2022.

According to the port of Antwerp-Bruges, the reason that container throughput continues to face challenges is due to the disruption of container shipping globally and vessel delays, along with the large volume of imported goods also decreased.

Annick De Ridder, Vice-Mayor of the City of Antwerp and President of the board of directors of Port of Antwerp-Bruges, said: “Additional container shipping capacity and strategic infrastructure investment are integral to ensuring this. our status as a leading port in the world."

At the same time, Russia-related container traffic decreased by 39% due to the war in Ukraine.

The total throughput of goods through the port was 147.2 million tons, up 1.4% over the same period last year.

Specifically, general merchandise grew by double digits in the first half of the year, 22% year-on-year in 2021, and recorded the highest volume of shipments since 2011.

Furthermore, RORO (Roll-on/Roll-off) vehicle traffic increased by 8.9%, while the dry bulk segment increased by 17.6% and the liquid bulk segment by 16.5%.

The context continues to pose significant challenges, especially in the container segment. Thanks to the merger, we can now offer two complementary platforms as a unified port, significantly strengthening our position in the international logistics chain and as one of the main gateways to Europe," commented Jacques Vandermeiren, CEO of the Port of Antwerp-Bruges.
