Australia's main port has seen total container throughput (full and empty) increase by 9.5% over the past eight years, with total throughput reaching 284,487 TEUs, and container throughput since the beginning of the year also increased by 6.5%.

Full container imports from overseas increased 11.2% compared to August 2021, with trade increasing sharply at the start of the traditional peak season, while full overseas container exports also increased by 8 .2% compared to August 2021, with raw cotton, wheat, cottonseed, hay and rags all outperforming last year's levels. In addition, the total volume of empty containers was 7.9% higher than the same month last year.

However, the Port of Melbourne said container shipping activity in early September 2022 was lower than at the same time in 2021.

"Globally, congestion and delays are still being seen however schedule reliability globally continues to improve. Container freight rates continued to decline during August, although still well above pre-pandemic levels," commented the port.
