TS Lines bunkering operation causes Hong Kong oil spill

Parts of Hong Kong's Kwai Tsing Container Terminals remain closed for clean-up operations following an oil spill on the night of 20 August.

The fuel oil spill occurred while the 1,100-TEU TS Kobe, a container ship operated by TS Lines, was refuelling at berths 6 and 7, operated by Hongkong International Terminals.

The ship's fuel was supplied by Yee Lee 2, a barge operated by local fuel supplier Yee Lee.

Hong Kong’s Marine Department said it was alerted to the spill at around 10pm local time on 20 August and immediately took measures to respond to the spill.

The oil slick is believed to have spread to waters around Kwai Tsing Pier 4 and the Tsing Yi and Stonecutters districts in Hong Kong.

VesselsValue ship tracking data shows the TS Kobe, which serves TS Lines’ North Vietnam 2 service, is still anchored at the site of the incident.

Representatives from TS Lines and Yee Lee declined to comment when contacted by Container News, citing ongoing investigations into the spill. Fuel barge operators in Hong Kong told Container News that the cleanup could take at least a month.

In June, a major fuel leak in Singapore took two months to completely clear, with beaches reopening this month.
