US CPI Rises 2.7% in 2025: Inflationary Pressures Accompany Supply Chain Tightening

According to the annual report released on Tuesday by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for All Urban Consumers rose 2.7% in 2025.
The report indicates that this overall increase was primarily driven by a 0.4% rise in the shelter index recorded in December. Additionally, food and energy indexes contributed significantly to the annual growth momentum.
The Inflation Landscape: Food and Energy Escalation
Over the past year, the food index increased by 3.1%. This marks an acceleration compared to 2024, when food prices rose only 2.5%.
• Food at home: Costs rose 2.4% in 2025 (compared to a 1.8% rise the previous year).
• Food away from home: Became more expensive, with the index climbing 4.1%, higher than the 3.6% increase in 2024.
Energy costs witnessed a significant reversal, rising 2.3% in 2025 after falling 0.5% in 2024.
• The electricity index rose 6.7%.
• The natural gas index surged 10.8% over the last 12 months.
• Conversely, the gasoline index fell 3.4%, matching the rate of decline from the previous year.
Core Inflation and a Record for Recreation
The index for all items less food and energy (Core CPI) rose 2.6% over the last year. Notable increases include:
• Shelter: +3.2%
• Medical care: +3.2%
• Recreation: +3.0%
Particularly, the recreation index witnessed its largest monthly increase ever in December, rising 1.2%.
Impact on Supply Chains and the Freight Market
These pricing pressures correspond closely with shifts in the supply chain. According to a December survey of supply chain managers, transportation capacity plummeted to its lowest level since October 2021.
The Logistics Managers’ Index (LMI) showed a contraction in December. Simultaneously, transportation pricing rose to its highest level since January 2025, with reports indicating the December freight market was the strongest in over three years.
Stronger-than-expected consumer demand throughout 2025 likely contributed to the strain on transportation operations. A forecast for the coming year predicts a significant shift in the freight market, with expectations of tighter capacity and higher pricing.
