U.S. Reimposes Maritime Blockade on Iran as Tensions Escalate in the Strait of Hormuz

The United States has announced the reinstatement of a maritime blockade against Iran while pledging to safeguard freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz following renewed military clashes. The escalating tensions have pushed oil prices sharply higher and intensified concerns over the resilience of the global energy supply chain.

Strait-Of-Hormuz

On Monday, U.S. President Donald Trump announced that Washington would reimpose a maritime blockade on Iran in the Gulf region, while reaffirming that the United States would ensure uninterrupted navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. The announcement came just hours after the United States and Iran exchanged another round of missile and drone attacks, further escalating military tensions across the region.

The latest wave of conflict erupted after Iran declared the closure of the Strait of Hormuz over the previous weekend. The move not only shattered hopes for a temporary agreement to ease hostilities but also triggered an immediate reaction in global energy markets, sending oil prices sharply higher.

United States Reasserts Its Role as the "Guardian of the Strait of Hormuz"

In a post on Truth Social, President Donald Trump declared: "The Hormuz Strait is OPEN, and will remain OPEN, with or without Iran. We are reinstating THE IRANIAN BLOCKADE."

He also proposed an entirely new framework for maritime security in the region: "The U.S.A. will be, from this point forward, known as 'THE GUARDIAN OF THE HORMUZ STRAIT', but as such, and as a matter of FAIRNESS, will be reimbursed, at the rate of 20% on all cargo shipped.”

Iran's Supreme Military Command immediately rejected any U.S. claim to authority over the strategic waterway, insisting that Washington has no role in determining the future of the Strait of Hormuz.

Military Conflict Continues to Expand

The collapse of diplomatic efforts quickly gave way to a broader military confrontation.

According to Iranian authorities, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) launched attacks against several U.S. military facilities in Bahrain and Kuwait, while also claiming to have destroyed multiple radar installations in Oman and struck fuel depots and ammunition storage facilities at Prince Hassan Air Base in Jordan.

Meanwhile, the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed that it had deployed fighter aircraft, naval assets, and unmanned aerial vehicles to strike numerous Iranian military targets, including:

●    Air defense systems

●    Coastal radar stations

●    Missile and UAV launch sites

●    Ammunition depots

●    IRGC fast attack craft operating around the Strait of Hormuz

According to the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA), U.S. airstrikes continued throughout Monday, targeting military facilities in Bandar Abbas, Qeshm, and Abadan.

These developments indicate that both the intensity and geographical scope of the confrontation are expanding rapidly, placing the 60-day ceasefire agreement signed last month on the brink of collapse.

Speaking on Fox & Friends, President Donald Trump said: "We had a deal. It was a done deal, and then they broke it. They always break it. We've had 10 deals with these people, and so we're just going to hit them very hard."

In response, Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf wrote on the social media platform X: "The era of one-sided deals is OVER. We told you: keep your word or pay the price. Reality is knocking."

Meanwhile, the Houthi movement in Yemen accused Saudi Arabia of carrying out airstrikes on Sanaa International Airport and vowed retaliation, raising concerns that the conflict could spread further across the Middle East.

Hormuz Becomes the Epicenter of the Energy Crisis

Control of the Strait of Hormuz - the maritime chokepoint through which roughly 20% of the world's oil supply passed before the latest escalation - has become the central strategic objective for both sides.

Market analysts believe that Iran's effective enforcement of a de facto blockade has already had a significant impact on global energy markets. Brent crude oil rose more than 4% during Monday's trading session following President Trump's announcement and growing concerns over potential disruptions to energy shipments through the Strait of Hormuz.

Despite U.S. accusations, Tehran continues to insist that it retains full control over the waterway.

Iranian official Hossein Mohebbi stated: "We continue to assert our authority and control over the Strait of Hormuz with strength and power, and we will force foreigners and their allies to surrender to the will of the Iranian people."

Iran Pursues Its Own Governance Framework for the Strait of Hormuz

In a separate statement, the IRGC argued that normal maritime traffic could only resume if the United States ceased its military operations in the region, warning: "Continued interference could lead to greater incidents in the global oil and gas sector."

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei also revealed that Tehran is working to establish a joint coordination mechanism with Oman to manage vessel traffic through the Strait of Hormuz. However, he said U.S. pressure on Oman has slowed progress on the initiative.

Over the longer term, Iran is reportedly seeking to establish a formal licensing and transit fee system for commercial vessels navigating the Strait of Hormuz. If implemented, such a framework would represent a fundamental shift in the governance of one of the world's most strategically important maritime corridors for global trade and energy flows.
