Vienna Airport Sets New Air Cargo Record in 2025

Vienna Airport has announced its operational results for 2025, boasting record figures for air cargo volume driven by an increase in new flight operations and robust growth in pharmaceutical and e-commerce shipments.

Impressive Growth Indicators

Specifically, the Austrian air hub recorded a 5.3% year-on-year growth, bringing total cargo output to a record 313,763 tonnes last year.

Airport representatives attributed this improvement to the “targeted expansion of long-haul services” with the addition of more belly-hold capacity, as well as strong growth in the e-commerce and pharmaceutical segments.

Notably, the Vienna Pharma Handling Center also recorded a new all-time high, exceeding the previous year's results by 6.4%.

Cargo Flow Analysis

•    Imports: Import volumes last year rose 2.8% from a year earlier to 167,568 tonnes, serving onward distribution to consignees in the Central and Eastern European region.

•    Exports: Tonnage “increased significantly,” particularly in the first half of the year, driven by US customs policies. With a total of 146,195 tonnes, this figure surpassed the previous year by 8.4%. Key export markets included Asia and the United States.

Vision from Airport Leadership

Assessing the airport's strategic role in the supply chain, Mr. Julian Jäger, Joint CEO and COO of Vienna Airport, stated: “Airfreight secures global supply chains and promotes economic growth. Vienna Airport plays a central role in this context - as a logistics hub and as the most important gateway for air cargo to Central and Eastern Europe.”

Mr. Jäger further emphasized the airport's competitiveness: “With global airlines at the location, a specialised service offering and a strong team, we are very well positioned.”

Meanwhile, Mr. Michael Zach, Senior Vice President of Handling and Cargo, noted that the airport - traditionally a leading transshipment hub for cargo from Asia - has benefited from increasing volumes bound for North America.

Looking ahead, Mr. Zach shared: “In 2026, we naturally aim to build on this positive development and are confident that we can achieve this together with our customers and partners.”
