Xiamen Port to build four more terminals to increase capacity by more than 4 million TEU

The Port of Xiamen has announced construction plans after it was given the green light by China's Ministry of Transport this week. It is known that this project has been included in the 14th Five-Year Plan of the State Council to develop a modern transport system and is among the 102 major national projects.

Located along the 1.86km coastline in the Xiang'an area of the port, the deepwater terminals can simultaneously accommodate two 20,000 TEU vessels, one 15,000 TEU container ship, one 10,000 TEU vessel and one 5,000 TEU container ship. Currently, ports in the Xiang'an region can handle around 3 million TEUs annually.

In 2022, the Port of Xiamen handled 12.99 million TEUs, up from 9.9 million TEUs in 2021. Xiamen is located across from Taiwan and is key to cross-strait trade and is part of the Maritime Silk Route. Xiamen's increase in container capacity is expected to adapt to the development trend of large-scale container ships.

To show its ambition to welcome many large cargo ships, Xiamen Port on April 21 welcomed three large cargo ships at the same time, a first-time feat for the port. Three ships called at Songyu Container Terminal: Maersk Mc-Kinney Moller 18,270 TEU, Gunvor Maersk 11,078 TEU and Eleonora Maersk 11,000 TEU.

The Haicang area of Xiamen port is also expected to upgrade its container handling capacity. Currently, the terminals in Haicang handle about 9 million TEUs annually. There are plans to build seven more berths that can accommodate ships from 10,000 to 20,000 TEUs.
