The Port of Shanghai, China - The world's largest container port - has managed to maintain operations during the time when Shanghai city was locked down due to Covid. With many factories, warehouses closed and logistics services restricted, production of goods at the Shanghai store declined in strength in April.
Shanghai port's average daily container handling capacity reached around 100,000 TEU in April, down 25% from the normal levels in the past.
Although still in operation, it is affected by a serious lack of capacity transport loader. In order to reduce the pressure of inland container transportation, Shanghai strongly promotes water transport with barges and transshipment from nearby ports,land-to-sea and sea-rail combined transportation to try and stabilise the supply chain.
In April, Shanghai's waterway transshipment volume was around 1.99 million TEUs, accounting for 65% of Shanghai's total container volume in April.
The lockdown continues in large areas in Shanghai despite plans to reopen areas where transmission has dropped to zero. The city government is also pushing to get more factory production back into operation.
