Hapag-Lloyd Reports Q1/2026 Loss Amid Dual Pressures from Freight Rates and Supply Chain Disruptions

According to the German shipping line, operational activities in the first quarter were significantly affected by severe weather conditions in the Atlantic region, coupled with geopolitical uncertainties related to the conflict in the Middle East. These factors have put immense pressure on operational efficiency and profit margins.
Financial Results Buck the Overall Market Trend
The latest financial report reveals that Hapag-Lloyd's liner shipping revenue dropped by 8% year-over-year to $4.8 billion. Transport volume also saw a slight decrease of 1%, falling to 3.2 million TEU.
Notably, this result runs counter to the general trend of the global container shipping market. According to data from Container Trade Statistics (CTS), total global container shipping volumes during the same period actually increased by 4.4%.
The decline in revenue, combined with persistently high operating costs, pushed the ocean freight segment's Earnings Before Interest and Taxes (EBIT) to a negative $174 million.
The primary cause stems from downward pressure on freight rates. In the first quarter, the carrier's average freight rate reached only $1,330/TEU, down 9.5% compared to the previous year. This decline closely mirrors the broader market's downward trajectory, as CTS data recorded an average industry-wide rate drop of 9.7%.
Operating Margins Continue to Face Pressure
Commenting on the first-quarter results, Rolf Habben Jansen, CEO of Hapag-Lloyd AG, stated: "The first quarter of 2026 was unsatisfactory for us, with weather-related supply chain disruptions [in the Atlantic] and pressure on freight rates leading to significantly lower results."
This statement reflects the reality facing many container carriers: market demand has yet to recover strongly enough, while operating costs, fuel expenses, and geopolitical risk factors continue to weigh heavily on operating margins.
Hapag-Lloyd Maintains Full-Year Guidance
Despite the less-than-positive results in the first quarter, Hapag-Lloyd's management has maintained its financial guidance for the full year 2026.
Specifically, full-year EBITDA is expected to range between $1.1 billion and $3.1 billion. Meanwhile, EBIT is projected to fall within a very broad bandwidth, ranging from a loss of $1.5 billion to a profit of $500 million.
This wide forecast range indicates that the German carrier is maintaining a cautious stance amidst the unpredictable variables of the global shipping market, particularly geopolitical risks, operating cost fluctuations, and the cargo demand outlook in the second half of the year.
In the context of continued instability in the international container market, Hapag-Lloyd's financial results clearly reflect the mounting pressure carriers face: balancing the need to maintain efficient operational capacity while protecting profitability in an environment of weakening freight rates and continuous supply chain disruptions.
