Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd launch “Gemini” cooperation
Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd officially launch the Gemini shipping network, with 340 container vessels, pledging to improve schedule reliability and reduce the impact of geopolitical instability.
The world's two leading container shipping groups, Maersk A/S and Hapag-Lloyd AG, will officially launch the “Gemini Cooperation” cooperation project Saturday, 1 February. The cooperation aims to build a flexible, tightly connected shipping network with a schedule reliability of over 90% when fully operational.
In total, around 340 vessels will join the joint network, with the first sailings starting on 1 February. The vessels will gradually move to the new schedule in phases, with completion expected by the end of May. By June, the entire network will be fully deployed with all vessels operating on the Gemini schedule.
“We are now ready to commence the phase-in of the new network. Over the last year, we have carefully planned this to ensure that all our customers experience a smooth transition into the new network. With its innovative design, we believe our customers will benefit from increased reliability, flexibility, and more competitive products,” said Johan Sigsgaard, Chief Product Officer of Ocean at Maersk.
According to Hapag-Lloyd, Gemini’s advanced hub and spoke network will deliver significant improvements in reliability and connectivity.
This approach also helps to mitigate the impact of geopolitical disruptions, with most of the world’s shipping lanes still avoiding the Suez Canal due to the threat of missile attacks in the Red Sea, a result of the conflict between Israel and Hamas. Instead, the Gemini network will navigate around the Cape of Good Hope, avoiding the Mediterranean. Both partners are committed to continuing to monitor the situation in the region and only returning to the Red Sea when it is safe to do so.
“Thanks to our effective hub & spoke operating system, we can deploy larger vessels and thus simultaneously optimize speed, reduce idling times, and thereby cutting down on carbon emissions. All of this saves our customers a lot of time and resources,” said Rolf Habben Jansen, CEO of Hapag-Lloyd.
