HMM Boosts Asia-East Coast South America

Korean container shipping company HMM is boosting its trade between Asia and the East Coast of South America by launching a second service connecting the two regions.

HMM today announced that it will launch its FL2 service between Asia and the East Coast of South America, via the Cape of Good Hope, in April. The service will be operated in conjunction with Premier Alliance partner ONE.

“With the introduction of the FL2 service, HMM will provide our customers with more efficient and reliable service, following Far East-India-Latin America (FIL) service, and we will continue to enhance our presence in the East Latin America market that has a high potential for future growth and development,” said a representative of HMM.

The first vessel of the FL2 service will depart from Busan “in the first week of April” with a round trip time of 77 days, with the following routes: Busan – South China – Singapore – Rio Grande – Santos – Santa Catarina – Singapore – Hong Kong – Busan.

At present, HMM has not announced details about the type of vessel to be used, but based on the existing FIL service, some information can be predicted. FIL has a round trip time of 84 days (12 weeks) and requires 12 vessels to maintain a weekly call frequency.

Compared to FL2, the FIL service has an additional port of call at Kattupalli (East coast of India) and 4 ports in Brazil, while FL2 only calls at 3 ports in Brazil.

The service is also partnered with ONE, but according to eeSea data, ONE is only a slot partner with 10% of loadable capacity, while the FIL vessels have an average capacity of 6,100 TEU. Therefore, FL2 is expected to require around 11 vessels to maintain the weekly service, but it is not yet clear how the two partners will allocate tonnage.

In addition, HMM will also launch a dedicated feeder service at River Plate to connect cargo to Argentina and Uruguay via the port of Rio Grande, with more competitive transit times.
