Maersk Suspends Cargo Bookings Across Multiple Gulf Nations Amid Hormuz Blockade Crisis

Danish shipping line Maersk has just issued a decision to suspend all specialized cargo bookings to and from major nations in the Gulf. This move comes amid fiercely escalating hostilities in West Asia and the continued gridlock of the vital maritime artery through the Strait of Hormuz.

Prioritizing Safety

In an official advisory, the shipping giant stated it is closely monitoring the constantly evolving developments in the Middle East. The carrier emphasized that the suspension of operations in West Asia is a decision aimed at ensuring the absolute safety of its personnel.

The official statement from Maersk explicitly noted: "We are taking operational measure to ensure the safety of our personnel, safeguard your cargo and maintain service stability across affected trades in the Middle East."

Specific Scope of Suspension and Exceptions

Maersk's statement clearly specified that the carrier has officially suspended all bookings for refrigerated containers (reefers), Dangerous Goods (DG), and Out-of-Gauge/In-gauge (OOG/IG) cargo.

This suspension strictly applies to cargo originating from, destined for, or transshipping through eight countries: the UAE, Oman, Iraq, Kuwait, Jordan, Qatar, Bahrain, and Saudi Arabia. However, Maersk noted that certain exceptions apply to specific transshipment cargo at the Port of Salalah (Oman).

In the same advisory, the company stated that the suspension of 'dangerous goods' to Israel will be applied based on specific UN numbers.

This supply chain crisis is not merely a problem for shipping lines alone. The paramount importance of these sea routes has compelled major global powers to step in. In a related development, the Chinese government held emergency meetings on Tuesday with executives from Maersk and MSC to discuss strategic response measures.
