Rate Volatility: CMA CGM Announces Sweeping Adjustments to FAK Rates and Peak Season Surcharges Across Major Trade Lanes

CMA CGM has officially issued customer advisories regarding updated Freight All Kinds (FAK) tariffs and Surcharges on main commercial routes. The majority of these changes will officially come into effect at the beginning of April 2026.

1. FAK Rate Updates: Turkey, Egypt & Syria to Australia and New Zealand

CMA CGM is adjusting its FAK rates for export shipments from Mediterranean ports (specifically in Turkey, Syria, and Egypt) to the Australian and New Zealand markets.

● Effective Date: April 1, 2026

● Applicable Cargo: Dry goods

● Routing: Offering both direct route options and relay (transshipment) via Asia.

Reference Tariff (applicable for 20' / 40' containers):

● Port of Aliaga to Sydney: $1,850 / $3,200

● Port of Lattakia to Sydney: €2,400 / €4,300

● Port of Alexandria to Sydney: $3,000 / $5,500

2. Peak Season Surcharge (PSS) Implementation: Far East to East Africa

To accurately reflect seasonal demand and current market conditions, CMA CGM will implement a Peak Season Surcharge (PSS) for cargo originating from China bound for East Africa.

● Validity Period: March 15, 2026 – June 14, 2026

● Applicable Cargo: All dry cargo

Standard PSS Levels (applicable for 20' / 40' containers in USD):

● North China to Mombasa: $350 / $1,300

● North China to Dar es Salaam: $750 / $1,200

● North China to Mozambique (Beira, Maputo, Nacala): $850 / $1,500

● North China to Somalia (Mogadishu): $300 / $700

Alternative PSS Levels: Alongside the standard rates, CMA CGM has also issued alternative PSS levels for this same route. The application of these alternative levels will be determined based on the specific contract terms of each customer.

● North China to Mombasa: $100 / $800

● North China to Dar es Salaam: $500 / $700

● North China to Mozambique: $600 / $1,000

● North China to Somalia: $50 / $200

3. FAK Rate Updates: Mediterranean to North America (US & Canada)

For cargo flows bound for the North American market, CMA CGM has published a new FAK tariff applicable to shipments departing from the Mediterranean region (including ports in Turkey, Greece, Lebanon, North Africa, and the West Mediterranean) to the US East Coast, US West Coast, and Canada.

● Effective Date: April 1, 2026

Reference Tariff (applicable for 20' / 40' containers in USD):

● Genoa to New York: $2,750 / $3,600

● Genoa to Montreal: $3,300 / $4,600

● Genoa to Los Angeles: $3,350 / $4,025

● Istanbul to New York: $3,375 / $4,025

● Istanbul to Los Angeles: $4,450 / $5,075
