OOCL Q1 2026 Report: Revenue Records a 7.6% Decline

Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL) has released its business results for the first quarter of 2026, reporting total liner revenue of $2.14 billion, representing a 7.6% decrease compared to the same period last year. This decline occurred against a backdrop of plunging freight rates, which completely overshadowed the carrier's efforts to maintain modest volume growth.

Freight Rate Pressure Erases Volume Expansion Gains

Operationally, OOCL's total lifting volume recorded a slight increase of 1.7%, reaching 1.997 million TEUs. Simultaneously, the carrier's loadable capacity was expanded by 4.3%.

However, the paradox of the current market lies in the puzzle of operational efficiency and pricing. With carrying capacity growing at a faster pace than lifting volume, the overall load factor dropped by 2.1 percentage points. Exerting the greatest pressure on profit margins was the core metric - average revenue per TEU - which plummeted sharply by 9.1% year-over-year.

A Mixed Picture Across Key Trade Lanes

The divergence in business performance was highly evident across OOCL's strategic trade lanes during the first quarter of 2026:

● Trans-Pacific Trade Takes the Hardest Hit: This flagship trade lane witnessed a double blow as lifting volume declined by 5.9% (down to 523,385 TEUs), dragging revenue down by a steep 16.8% to a total of just $744.8 million.

● Asia-Europe Trade Shines in Cargo Volume: This was the only route to record a volume boom, surging by 11.8% (reaching 384,893 TEUs). Nevertheless, fierce freight rate competition caused revenue in this region to slide by 4.5%, closing at $481.9 million.

● Trans-Atlantic Trade: Recorded a slight contraction on both fronts. Volume dropped by 1.3% (to 133,910 TEUs), and revenue fell by 4.3% (to $163 million).

● Intra-Asia and Australasia Trade Holds the Steadiest Pace: This served as OOCL's most stable anchor this quarter. Lifting volume maintained a 2.9% growth rate (reaching 954,464 TEUs), helping total revenue remain relatively flat and preserving a modest 0.7% increase to reach $748.7 million.
