Red Sea Tensions Escalate: Houthis Signal Resumption of Attacks

As a United States carrier strike group advances into the Gulf, a familiar "specter" for the commercial shipping industry has re-emerged for the first time after months of quiet.

A video titled "Soon" was released last night by the Iran-backed Yemeni military group, indicating preparations to target vessels once again.

The 800-Day Crisis Milestone

According to container shipping expert Lars Jensen, who has closely tracked Houthi attacks daily on LinkedIn, tomorrow marks the 800th day of the Red Sea shipping crisis. The Houthis began their campaign in November 2023 in solidarity with Hamas' war with Israel.

Although the Houthis officially declared in early November that they would halt attacks on commercial ships, and their last confirmed strike was on September 29 last year against the Dutch cargo ship Minervagracht, the tide is now turning.

Previous Houthi attacks, which killed at least nine crew members and sunk four vessels, forced global trade to reroute via the Cape of Good Hope over the past few years, bolstering ton-miles and freight rates. Recent weeks saw a rise in traffic returning to the Suez Canal thanks to the prolonged Houthi ceasefire, but this is now under a major question mark following the release of the threatening video.

US Increases Military Presence

The US is maneuvering a carrier strike group toward the Gulf as tensions with Iran flare up again, months after US forces struck three Iranian nuclear facilities during Israel's 12-day war with Tehran.

President Donald Trump publicly supported anti-government protesters in Iran earlier this year, telling them “Help is on its way” during a government crackdown, before softening his tone after the protests were quelled.

Mr. Trump confirmed this latest military deployment, stating: “We’re watching Iran. We have a big force going towards Iran … we have a big flotilla going in that direction, and we’ll see what happens.”

US officials said the USS Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group, comprising Arleigh Burke-class destroyers equipped with Tomahawk cruise missiles and Aegis air and missile defense systems, was diverted from the South China Sea to the Middle East and reportedly entered the Arabian Sea last night.

Risk Spreading to the Strait of Hormuz

A senior Iranian politician declared earlier this year that any US aggression against Tehran would make international shipping a target. Iran has a history of targeting commercial vessels, spoofing their Automatic Identification Systems (AIS), and occasionally seizing ships and crews as hostages.

In a related move to tighten enforcement, on Friday, the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) under the US Treasury Department imposed sanctions on nine more "shadow fleet" vessels and their respective owners or managers due to their ties with Iran.
