UNCTAD and Singapore Partner to Drive Sustainable Maritime Transition

The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) and the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) have officially launched a new partnership. The central goal of this collaboration is to accelerate the shift toward a more sustainable, highly resilient, and inclusive global maritime transport system.

The Dual Challenge: Decarbonization and Maintaining Port Efficiency

Seaports play a pivotal role in global trade and economic development, handling over 80% of worldwide trade volumes. However, these critical logistics nodes still consume massive amounts of energy and rely heavily on fossil fuels.

As the pressure for a green transition, decarbonization, and modernization intensifies, nations face a mounting challenge: how to drastically slash emissions while preserving operational efficiency and the competitive edge of their supply chains.

The Synergy of Policy Planning and Operational Prowess

This agreement marks a significant step forward in the ongoing collaboration between UNCTAD and Singapore—one of the world's largest maritime transshipment hubs and a long-standing strategic partner in advancing cutting-edge trade and transport solutions.

Emphasizing the synergistic value of the agreement, Pedro Manuel Moreno, Deputy Secretary-General of UNCTAD, stated: "This partnership brings together Singapore’s operational excellence and UNCTAD’s global development expertise."
