World containership demolition volume in 2022 has fallen to a 17-year low, with only six fully cellular container ships with a total capacity of 10,904 TEUs sold to recyclers. This is the lowest level since 2005.

Demolition volume in 2022 is only 10,904 TEU, lower than the 16,500 TEU realized in 2021, an already poor year and a far cry from the nearly 200,000 TEU recycled two years earlier, in 2020. The record years were 2016 and 2017, with demolition volume reaching 655,000 TEU and 417,000 TEU respectively.

The main reason for the drop in demolition volume in 2022 is the highly profitable charter and freight market, which has spurred carriers and shipowners to continue trading their old vessels and limited demolition, despite the high purchase price of scrap ships.

According to Alphaliner forecast, the world containership demolition volume will increase dramatically in 2023 to 350,000 TEU.
