CMA CGM Eyes Entry into India’s Inland Waterway Transport Market

CMA CGM, the world’s third-largest container carrier, is currently evaluating an entry into India’s inland waterway logistics sector, signaling a potential expansion of its footprint beyond pure ocean freight. The French carrier confirmed it is exploring opportunities to operate barges and river cargo services along the country's burgeoning waterway network.

Long-Term Commitment to the Indian Market

This interest comes as India places a strong focus on developing its maritime and shipbuilding capabilities.

Earlier this year, CMA CGM made a landmark move by ordering six new LNG dual-fuel container vessels from Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL). This investment is viewed by industry experts as a reinforcement of the group’s long-term commitment to the Indian market.

Furthermore, CMA CGM highlighted the immense transformational potential of Vadhavan Port in Maharashtra state. The company views this upcoming deep-draft port project as a critical enabler for India’s ascent into the so-called “global maritime premier league,” offering scale and connectivity competitive with leading international transshipment hubs.

Unlocking New Multimodal Corridors

If the company decides to proceed with inland waterway services, CMA CGM could help unlock new multimodal corridors for the industry, providing a more cost-effective and environmentally friendly cargo transport solution.

Deploying these services would offer dual benefits: helping to decongest highways and railways while connecting hinterland manufacturing hubs more directly with major gateways.
