CMA CGM Implements Peak Season Surcharge (PSS) Across Multiple Key Trade Lanes

Ocean carrier CMA CGM has unveiled plans to apply a Peak Season Surcharge (PSS) to several major international trade lanes originating in Asia. This move comes amid rising shipping demand on select trade corridors, particularly as the market enters its peak period of the year.

The routes subject to these adjustments include Canada, the Mediterranean, North Africa, and West Africa. The majority of the revised surcharges will come into force between late June and early July 2026.

Below are the detailed surcharge levels broken down by specific trade lanes:

Taiwan to East and West Coast Canada

For shipments departing from the Taiwanese market bound for the East and West coasts of Canada, the carrier will implement flexible PSS rates divided into three distinct phases:

●    From June 15 to June 30: A surcharge of $2,065 per 20-foot container, $2,530 per 40-foot container, and $3,060 per 45-foot container will apply.

●    From July 1 to July 9: Rates will adjust to $1,800 per 20-foot container, $2,000 per 40-foot container, and $2,530 per 45-foot container.

●    From July 10 onwards: The surcharge will surge sharply to $3,600 per 20-foot container, $4,000 per 40-foot container, and $5,050 per 45-foot container.

Far East to the Mediterranean and North Africa

Beginning July 1, a surcharge of $1,400/TEU will be introduced for all cargo shipped from the Far East - encompassing China, Northeast Asia, and Southeast Asia (excluding Timor-Leste) - destined for ports in the Mediterranean and North Africa.

Asia to West Africa Network

For trade lanes connecting Asia and West Africa, CMA CGM has also established a series of new surcharges to optimize operational costs:

●    From Northeast Asia: A PSS of $200/TEU will apply to all dry and reefer cargo effective July 1.

●    From China to Southern West Africa and Mauritania: Effective June 22, cargo moving from China to Southern West Africa (including Angola, Congo, DRC, Namibia, Gabon, and Cameroon) will incur a surcharge of $575/TEU. 
Shipments bound for Mauritania will be subject to a specific surcharge of $600/TEU.

●    From China to All of West Africa (effective July 1): Starting July 1, CMA CGM will supersede the June 22 tariffs with a uniform PSS of $200/TEU for dry and reefer cargo originating in China and destined for all of Southern, Central, and Northern West Africa.

●    From Southeast Asia: Also taking effect on July 1, a matching surcharge of $200/TEU will apply to shipments from Southeast Asia to all destinations across West Africa, applicable to short-term contracts.
