COSCO Shipping Sets Historic Milestone: Completes World's First Green Ammonia Bunkering Operation

COSCO Shipping has just achieved a historic milestone in the maritime industry's decarbonization journey, as SINOBUNKER, one of the group's subsidiaries, completed the world's first green ammonia bunkering operation at the Port of Dalian on July 25.

This zero-carbon green ammonia bunkering operation is considered an industry breakthrough and a transformative leap for China's shipping sector, aiming to meet national goals for carbon neutrality and carbon peaking. Unlike traditional marine fuels, the combustion of green ammonia releases only nitrogen and water, making it a game-changing solution for slashing ship emissions.

Closing the Loop on Green Energy

The significance of this event extends beyond a single technical operation. As stated in the press release: "This pioneering bunkering operation not only provides a replicable technical model for new energy applications in the global shipping industry but also demonstrates COSCO Shipping's unwavering commitment to promoting green and low-carbon practices."

Crucially, the green ammonia used in this operation was produced entirely using renewable electricity. This effectively closes the loop across the entire value chain – from green ammonia production via green energy, through transportation, to bunkering and final utilization in vessel operations.

International Recognition of Standards

With superior full life cycle carbon management capabilities, as well as exceptional environmental performance and sustainability, this green ammonia product has been highly rated by prestigious international organizations.

The product not only achieved the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC Plus) but also became the world's first green ammonia product to receive renewable ammonia certification from Bureau Veritas, a global testing, inspection, and certification organization.
