Hapag-Lloyd and DHL Partner to Decarbonize Ocean Freight with Sustainable Fuels
.webp)
Hapag-Lloyd and DHL Global Forwarding have just signed a three-year framework agreement to reduce Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions through the use of sustainable marine fuels.
The first order under this agreement, placed in July 2025, resulted in an avoidance of 25,000 tonnes of CO2 equivalent (CO2e). The biofuel used is a second-generation fuel, produced from waste and residual feedstocks.
Danny Smolders, Global Head of Sales at Hapag-Lloyd, said: “This order demonstrates the feasibility of reducing Scope 3 emissions with sustainable marine fuels. Our partnership with DHL is creating real momentum in decarbonizing supply chains.”
Casper Ellerbaek, Global Head of Ocean Freight at DHL, added: “This agreement is a crucial step toward a decarbonized shipping industry. Using sustainable fuels and the book and claim mechanism helps our customers meet their climate goals.”
The "Book and Claim" Mechanism: A Solution for Limited Supply
The "book and claim" approach allows companies to account for emissions reductions separately from the physical use of the fuel. This mechanism helps to address the current limited supply and high cost of sustainable marine fuels.
Hapag-Lloyd aims to achieve net-zero emissions for its fleet by 2045, while DHL has a similar goal for 2050. Both companies offer sustainable shipping solutions – Hapag-Lloyd through its Ship Green product and DHL via its GoGreen Plus service – which help customers reduce their Scope 3 emissions and track their climate progress.
By combining sustainable fuels and innovative solutions, Hapag-Lloyd and DHL are driving the shipping industry towards a greener future.
