Hormuz Crisis Reaches Boiling Point: US Navy Opens Fire to Intercept Vessel, Iran Establishes Toll Corridor

Source: U.S. Central Command / Splash247
The Strait of Hormuz has just endured three days of intense volatility, marked by a chain of continuous closures and reopenings, vessel attacks, and culminating in a US Navy boarding and seizure operation. The current situation has placed commercial shipping operators on red alert regarding maritime safety in the region.
The crisis worsened significantly over the weekend. Shortly after declaring the strait open, Iran reversed its decision less than 24 hours later, reinforcing this pivot by attacking an oil tanker and a container ship.
The "Toll Corridor" and OFAC Sanction Risks
Adding a new layer of complexity for shipowners: Iran has begun notifying operators that vessels willing to pay a fee for so-called "safety and security services" will be granted priority passage through its waters. For most international shipping lines, this offer is a non-starter; compliance would put them in direct conflict with sanctions regulations enforced by the US Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), effectively jeopardizing their entire business operations in the US market.
US Navy Opens Fire to Intercept the Container Ship Touska
The most dramatic incident occurred when US armed forces fired upon the engine room of the Iran-flagged container ship Touska, crippling the vessel before executing a boarding and seizure operation under the terms of the US naval blockade. AIS tracking data indicated that the Touska was approximately 40 nautical miles off Iran's port of Chabahar at the time of the incident.
US Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed that the guided-missile destroyer USS Spruance intercepted the vessel as it was transiting the Arabian Sea at a speed of 17 knots en route to Bandar Abbas. The shots were fired after US forces issued continuous warnings over a six-hour period. It is noted that the Touska has been on OFAC's sanctions list since 2020.
In response to this action, Iran’s military command vehemently condemned the seizure as an "act of armed piracy" and stated there would be a swift retaliation.
The Larak Corridor: Tehran's Bid for Administrative Control
Amidst the chaotic storm, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy (IRGCN) has established a new maritime route near the strait. Dubbed the "Larak Corridor" and announced via the state broadcaster IRIB on April 19, this route runs from the waters south of Hormuz Island to the areas south of Larak Island.
Analysts view this move as Tehran's attempt to assert administrative control over maritime traffic flows, even as the military situation on the ground remains highly volatile and combustible.
