M&A Deal: DHL Acquires South African Logistics Trio to Expand Its Ecosystem in Africa

The Competition Tribunal has officially and unconditionally approved a significant merger, paving the way for DHL Supply Chain South Africa to acquire 100% ownership of three local logistics companies: Vital Distribution Solutions, Staffing Logistics, and Vital Fleet.

The Tribunal announced its decision on Thursday, April 9. Once the transaction is fully executed, DHL will assume sole control over all three business entities.

This is seen as a highly synergistic move. While DHL is part of a global transport and logistics conglomerate offering a comprehensive third-party logistics (3PL) ecosystem across multiple sectors, the target companies hold specialized links in the local logistics and support services value chain:

● Vital Distribution Solutions: Specializes in providing road freight, distribution, and warehouse management services.

● Staffing Logistics: A dedicated provider of temporary workforce solutions for the transport, retail, hospitality, and cleaning sectors.

● Vital Fleet: Offers commercial fleet leasing and management services.

A Leap Following a Record 6 Billion Rand Investment

This strategic acquisition comes on the heels of DHL’s massive 6 billion Rand investment in its African operations, announced in October 2025.

According to Hennie Heymans, CEO of the forwarder's Sub-Saharan Africa region, the company's core objective is to fully capitalize on the region’s booming trade growth. Sharing this vision, Heymans emphasized: "As trade expands, businesses are asking for predictable transit times, consistent delivery performance and support that understands local conditions. By raising the bar on service and proximity, we will help more African companies trade efficiently and compete on a bigger stage."

Data from DHL indicates that Sub-Saharan Africa emerged as a global bright spot, leading the world in trade value expansion during the first half of 2025. With an annual growth rate of 10%, it is currently the second-fastest-growing region globally.

Concluding the report, John Pearson, CEO of DHL Express, affirmed that this capital injection reflects the group's high level of confidence, alongside the increasingly expansive trade opportunities within this highly promising market.
