Strait of Hormuz Officially Reopens: Hope for Over 900 Stranded Vessels

After a prolonged standstill since the outbreak of hostilities on February 28, the Strait of Hormuz— the world's most critical maritime chokepoint—has now been declared fully open for commercial shipping operations. This move occurred immediately after the ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon took effect.

Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi issued the official announcement: "In line with the ceasefire in Lebanon, the passage for all commercial vessels through Strait of Hormuz is declared completely open for the remaining period of ceasefire, on the coordinated route as already announced by Ports and Maritime Organisation of the Islamic Rep. of Iran."

The "Coordinated" Route and Underlying Risks

Despite the declaration that the Strait is fully open, the message implicitly mandates that vessels must navigate the new route established by Iran around Larak Island, north of the traditional shipping lane (which Iran previously claimed had been mined). The term "coordinated" implies that transit requires approval from Iranian authorities.

International Maritime Organization (IMO) Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez expressed caution on the X platform: "We are currently verifying the recent announcement related to the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, in terms of its compliance with freedom of navigation for all merchant vessels and secure passage using the IMO established traffic separation scheme."

Meanwhile, the US Naval Cooperation and Guidance for Shipping (NCAGS) warned that the mine threat in the traditional shipping lane is currently "was not fully understood" and advised shipping lines to "Consider avoidance of the area."

US Naval Blockade Remains in Effect Against Iran

On the Truth Social platform, US President Donald Trump confirmed the reopening of the strait but emphasized the military presence: "The Strait of Hormuz is completely open and ready for business and full passage, but the Naval blockade will remain in full force and effect as it pertains to Iran, only, until such time as our transaction with Iran is 100% complete."

Currently, US warships stationed in the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea continue to strictly enforce the blockade on all cargo flows to and from Iranian ports. The current 14-day ceasefire between the US and Iran is scheduled to expire on April 22, unless a new extension agreement is reached.

Humanitarian Implications and Energy Market Reactions

According to data from analysts at AXSMarine, as of April 15, approximately 949 commercial vessels remain stranded west of the Strait of Hormuz in the Arabian Gulf region. This situation is raising severe concerns about the welfare of the estimated 20,000 seafarers on board. After seven weeks of isolation, many ships are running dangerously low on food, fuel, and fresh water.

Immediately following the announcement of the strait's reopening, global crude oil prices recorded a historic drop. According to OilPrice.com:

●    WTI Crude: Trading at $81.31/barrel (down 14.13%).

●    Brent Crude: Trading at $86.41/barrel (down 13.06%).

The global maritime market is now closely monitoring data from Automatic Identification Systems (AIS) tracking services to verify the actual volume of traffic that will transit the strait in the coming days.
