Maersk Implements Sweeping Peak Season Surcharges Across Multiple Key Trade Lanes

Ocean carrier Maersk has issued an updated advisory regarding the rollout of Peak Season Surcharges on several arterial trade lanes. These surcharges are designed to address fluctuations in transport demand in the upcoming period.

1. Far East Asia to East Africa

The revised PSS will apply to shipments bound for Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) and Kenya.

●    Effective Date: March 23, 2026 (For cargo originating from Vietnam, this applies from March 24, 2026).

●    Detailed Rates:

○    From Southeast Asia to Dar es Salaam: Up to $350 per 20' container and $300 per 40' container.

○    From China/Hong Kong to Dar es Salaam: $200 per 20' container and $400 per 40' container.

○    To Kenya: Up to $500 per 20' container and $800 per 40' container.

2. Far East Asia to South Africa & Indian Ocean Islands

Similar to the East Africa region, cargo flows from the Far East to destinations such as Mozambique, Madagascar, the Seychelles, and other South African markets will also be subject to the new PSS.

●    Effective Date: March 23, 2026 (For cargo originating from Vietnam, this applies from March 24, 2026).

●    Detailed Rates:

○  $1,000 per 20' container.

○  $2,000 per 40' container.

3. North Europe to North America

Maersk will roll out a PSS for shipments departing from North and Central European countries to the United States and Canadian markets.

●    Effective Date: April 8, 2026.

●    Detailed Rates: $500 per container.

4. Europe to Mexico

A new surcharge will also be applied to cargo moving from Europe, the Mediterranean, and parts of Central Asia to Mexico.

●    Effective Date: April 1, 2026.

●    Detailed Rates:

○    Standard rate: $250 per 20' container and $500 per 40'/45' container.

○    Originating from Syria specifically: €220 per 20' container and €435 per 40'/45' container.

Notes on Application Conditions

Maersk emphasized that the above surcharges only apply to non-SPOT bookings and are calculated based on the Price Calculation Date (PCD). Additionally, depending on the specific characteristics of each shipment, other local or contingency surcharges may still incur.
