Maersk Launches Qilin Service, Significantly Reducing China–Australia Transit Times

To meet rising transportation demand across the Asia–Pacific market, Maersk has officially introduced the Qilin service, providing a direct connection between China and Australia. The maiden voyage is scheduled to depart on July 24, 2026.

Streamlined Network Designed for Faster Transit

According to Maersk, the Qilin service will operate on a simplified port rotation consisting of three major ports: Shanghai – Sydney – Melbourne. The streamlined network structure has been specifically designed to optimize transit times while increasing operational capacity on the China–Australia trade lane.

From a network strategy perspective, Qilin will operate alongside the carrier’s existing Dragon service. While Dragon will continue focusing on stable and highly reliable operations, Qilin is positioned as a premium fast-transit service targeting customers seeking the shortest possible shipping times while maintaining fixed weekly sailings.

Significant Transit Time Improvements in Both Directions

The most notable advantage of the Qilin service lies in its ability to substantially improve transit times for both inbound and outbound cargo flows.

For exports from China, transit time from Shanghai to Sydney will be reduced from 18 days to 14 days. Meanwhile, the Shanghai–Melbourne route will decrease from 21 days to 17 days.

On the return leg, the improvements are even more significant. Transit time from Sydney to Shanghai will be reduced from 28 days to 19 days, while the Melbourne–Shanghai route will be shortened from 24 days to just 15 days.

The substantial reduction in transit time is expected to help cargo owners accelerate inventory turnover, optimize stock management, and improve responsiveness to fluctuations in market demand.

Maersk Strengthens Its Presence in the Australian Market

The addition of the Qilin service reflects Maersk’s long-term commitment to the Australian market, as well as its broader strategy of developing specialized shipping products to meet increasingly diverse customer demands.

The carrier stated that the new service will provide additional shipping capacity between China and Sydney and Melbourne — currently Australia’s two most important commercial gateways.

Further details regarding vessel deployment plans and booking availability are expected to be released by Maersk ahead of the official launch of the Qilin service later this July.
