Maersk Raises Intermodal Fuel Surcharges in Australia and New Zealand

Maersk has announced adjustments to its Intermodal Fuel Fees (EFS/IFS) for domestic and intermodal transportation services across Australia and New Zealand. The decision comes as global energy costs continue to face upward pressure amid ongoing geopolitical instability in the Middle East.

Rising Pressure from Global Energy Market Volatility

According to Maersk, the recent increase in fuel prices, coupled with the strategic importance of the Strait of Hormuz - through which approximately 20% of the world's oil supply is transported - has significantly increased the cost of both landside transportation and intermodal logistics.

To offset these additional operating costs, the company has decided to adjust its fuel surcharge levels in both markets.

Revised Fuel Surcharge Rates

The revised fuel surcharges will take effect on 1 July 2026, as follows:

New Zealand

●    Increase of 17%

Australia

●    Victoria: +13%

●    New South Wales: +13%

●    Queensland: +13%

●    South Australia: +13%

●    Western Australia: +12%

Ensuring Reliable Domestic Transport Capacity

Maersk stated that the temporary fuel surcharge adjustment is intended to maintain service continuity, preserve transport capacity, and ensure the uninterrupted movement of cargo across its domestic logistics network.

The company also noted that its fuel surcharge mechanism, first introduced on 16 March 2026, will continue to be reviewed and updated on a monthly basis. Future surcharge levels will depend on developments in the global energy market and the prevailing fuel cost environment.
