Port of Long Beach Invests $58.2 Million to Expand Zero-Emission Cargo Handling Fleet

The Port of Long Beach has approved a US$58.2 million funding package to accelerate the deployment of zero-emission technologies and equipment across its terminal operations. The investment represents another key milestone in the port's ongoing transition toward fully zero-emission operations.

Funding Driven by California's SWIFT Program

The funding has been awarded through California's System-Wide Investment in Freight Transport (SWIFT) program, which is designed to promote more sustainable freight transportation, improve cargo movement efficiency, and reduce the environmental impacts of port-related activities on surrounding communities.

Investment Breakdown

Under the approved plan, the funding will support the procurement and deployment of the following zero-emission assets:

●    61 zero-emission cargo handling equipment units

●    21 electric charging stations

●    6 zero-emission harbor craft

●    5 environmentally friendly port service vessels

●    1 zero-emission locomotive

According to the Port of Long Beach, the investment will accelerate the transition to a fully zero-emission cargo handling fleet while supporting its ambition to become the world's first zero-emission seaport.

Accelerating the Green Port Transition

Commenting on the investment, Dr. Noel Hacegaba, Chief Executive Officer of the Port of Long Beach, emphasized the importance of expanding the port's portfolio of clean technologies.

"Expanding our clean technology portfolio is critical to the future of goods movement and to the health of the communities around us,"

He reaffirmed the port's commitment to accelerating the adoption of zero-emission technologies, adding: "We are shaping the future by deploying the latest zero-emission equipment today."

Frank Colonna, President of the Long Beach Board of Harbor Commissioners, echoed that view, noting that the latest funding builds on the success of previous investments made through the SWIFT program.

According to Colonna, the new investment will not only accelerate the port's transition to zero-emission operations but also enhance the reliability and efficiency of cargo movement through one of the busiest gateway ports in the United States.
