Major Maritime Incident at Port of Long Beach: 67 Containers Lost Overboard During Unloading

A container ship operating on charter to ZIM was involved in a serious cargo accident while berthed at the Port of Long Beach yesterday (Sept. 9). The incident saw 67 containers fall into the bay during unloading operations, with some striking a nearby clean-air barge.

The vessel involved is the Mississippi, a 5,504 TEU container ship built in 2024 and owned by MPC Container Ships.

Port officials confirmed that no injuries were reported, but some containers were damaged beyond repair, while others sank to the bottom of the bay. Several containers struck the clean-air barge – a vessel used to provide shore power and other emission-reduction services – causing damage that is still being assessed.

The U.S. Coast Guard has sealed off the berth – Berth G – and is conducting an investigation in coordination with the Long Beach Harbor Department. Initial indications suggest that a technical crane malfunction may have caused the collapse, although this has not been officially confirmed.

In a statement, ZIM said it is “actively cooperating with local port authorities and relevant agencies to contain the situation and assess any potential environmental impact.”
