Ocean Alliance’s 'Day 10' Network: A Strategic Pivot to Capture the 'China Plus One' Wave

In edition 752 of its Sunday Spotlight, maritime consultancy Sea-Intelligence provided a deep dive into Ocean Alliance’s new 2026 "Day 10" service product. In terms of overall connectivity, the Day 10 network boasts a total of 498 port-to-port connections, a net increase of three over the previous "Day 9" iteration.
Under a professional logistics lens, these figures and structural changes represent far more than mere route optimization. They unveil a critical strategic pivot by the alliance to directly cater to the booming "China Plus One" market in Southeast Asia.
An Overview of the "Day 10" Service Network
In terms of overall structure, the transition from Day 9 to Day 10 is defined by the following metrics:
● 318 port-to-port connections remain unchanged.
● 26 connections from Day 10 have been discontinued.
● 21 new connections have been introduced in the Day 10 product.
This brings the total to 498 port pairings, a slight increase from the Day 9 structure. However, a deeper analysis of port rotations and service frequency reveals a major strategic realignment. Ocean Alliance is repositioning its network to fully exploit Southeast Asia's potential.

This differentiation is clearly visible in the capacity adjustments across major trade lanes:
● Asia-Mediterranean: Recorded a 4.8% decrease in total connectivity.
● Asia-US East Coast: Remained flat (no change).
● Asia-US West Coast: Witnessed a robust 4.9% surge in total connections.
Repositioning Capacity in Vietnam and Thailand
What is particularly striking is that the capacity increase on the US West Coast trade is not a broad expansion, but rather a targeted "injection" of capacity into Vietnam and Thailand. Essentially, Ocean Alliance has upgraded these markets into core deep-sea origins.
● Hai Phong (Vietnam): Direct market reach has surged by 33%. This expansion includes the deployment of double-weekly services to New York and the launch of new direct connections to the US West Coast. This allows high-value cargo from Northern Vietnam to be shipped directly to the U.S., completely bypassing traditional transshipment hubs in South China.
● Laem Chabang (Thailand): Service frequency to the US West Coast has also doubled, moving from one to two calls per week.
The Direct Trade-off from Transshipment Hubs
The most pivotal aspect of this expansion is its "zero-sum" nature. The data indicates a direct operational trade-off: resources have been withdrawn from a major transshipment hub like Port Klang (Malaysia) to bolster direct-call frequency at Laem Chabang.
This move serves as clear evidence that Ocean Alliance is betting on the permanence of the shift in global sourcing. By establishing high-frequency direct corridors, the alliance is building a robust infrastructure foundation to capture the full brunt of cargo volumes flowing from the "China Plus One" wave.
