Ocean Shipping Disruptions and Tariff Uncertainties Drive Incremental Air Freight Demand in Q4
.webp)
Global air freight markets are bracing for an influx of cargo conversions as cargo owners increasingly weigh air options to bypass chronic ocean schedule unreliability. This modal pivot is expected to gain momentum once regulatory clarity surrounding tariff policies solidifies, according to the Asia-Pacific Freight Report for October 2026 released by Taiwan-headquartered forwarder Dimerco Express Group.
Protracted container shipping congestion - paired with resilient underlying consumer demand - threatens to stretch the traditional year-end peak season well beyond its usual window. With ocean transit times deteriorating, shippers managing time-sensitive inventories and strict delivery deadlines are turning to air transport to protect their supply pipelines. Should this conversion trend accelerate, available cargo space on prime long-haul lanes will face acute tightening through the remainder of Q4.
The forwarder also points out that Transpacific shipments currently idling amid tariff ambiguities could suddenly be released once trade policies are formalized. For cargo constrained by strict retail delivery windows, volumes initially slated for ocean transport are prime candidates for air conversion. A sudden, concentrated volume release would exert immediate, heavy pressure on air capacity out of major Asian gateways.
In its monthly market outlook, Dimerco emphasized: "Dimerco expects clearer tariff direction and persistent ocean congestion to potentially push more cargo into air as Q4 progresses."
Kathy Liu, Vice President of Global Sales and Marketing at Dimerco Express Group, noted that while booking activity has been relatively subdued, market dynamics could pivot abruptly once deferred shipments are unleashed: "Bookings look quiet right now, but that’s the calm before the door opens. Once held-back China-US cargo releases and ocean congestion pushes shippers into air, the space will face some constraints."
AI Infrastructure, Chips, and Peak Retail Prop Up Base Load
Beyond ad-hoc ocean conversions, baseline demand for AI servers, advanced semiconductors, high-performance computing (HPC) systems, and electronic components continues to absorb dedicated capacity across key Asian tech corridors. Concurrently, inventory pre-stocking for the Western holiday shopping season remains an essential demand anchor heading into peak Q4.
In Taiwan, robust liftings of AI infrastructure, enterprise servers, and semiconductor components continue to underpin outbound volume to North America and intra-Asia hubs, driving upward rate pressure across selected services.
Regional Capacity Realities Show Marked Divergence
Across the wider Asia-Pacific footprint, operating environments vary significantly by gateway:
● South Korea: Capacity has tightened noticeably across both freighter and passenger bellyhold space around the Chuseok holiday window. Dimerco advises that shippers currently require booking lead times of up to two weeks on select services departing Incheon for Southeast Asian hubs.
● China: Conditions remain bifurcated. Pre-holiday cargo rushes and resilient cross-border e-commerce flows have absorbed most available space on intra-regional routes, whereas capacity on long-haul services to the US and Europe remains comparatively balanced out of select regional airports.
● Southeast Asia, India, and Australia: US-bound cargo space remains tight across multiple regional hubs. Singapore continues to grapple with localized backlogs, while in Thailand, scheduled capacity reductions compounded by severe monsoon flooding across Bangkok have created notable operational bottlenecks.
● India: The ongoing festive season is straining both air and maritime export capacities bound for European and North American consumer markets.
These distinct regional nuances highlight that shippers cannot rely on broad regional generalizations; securing capacity and managing freight costs through Q4 will require granular, lane-by-lane execution.
