President Donald Trump on Monday announced that he would impose an additional 50% tariff on Chinese imports if the country does not immediately withdraw the 34% retaliatory tariffs it recently imposed on US goods.

China's move came last Friday, in response to the White House announcing a 34% retaliatory tariff on Wednesday.

“If China does not withdraw its 34% increase above their already long term trading abuses by tomorrow, April 8th, 2025, the United States will impose ADDITIONAL Tariffs on China of 50%, effective April 9th. Additionally, all talks with China concerning their requested meetings with us will be terminated! Negotiations with other countries, which have also requested meetings, will begin taking place immediately,” Trump posted on the Truth Social platform.

If the additional 50% tariff is implemented on Wednesday, the total US tariffs on Chinese goods will reach a record high of 84%.

Last Wednesday – which Trump called “Liberation Day” – he announced plans to impose comprehensive tariffs on all US trading partners.

The plan includes a 10% base tariff on all partners, along with a 25% tariff on some imported vehicles and auto parts. He also proposed a 34% tariff on Chinese goods, and a 20% tariff on goods from the European Union and several other countries.

In response, China announced on Friday that it would tighten export controls on some rare earth materials, which are key components in high-tech products such as computer chips and electric vehicle batteries.

In 2024, China was the United States’ third-largest trading partner, with two-way trade reaching $582 billion.
