Drewry’s WCI Marks 4th Consecutive Week of Gains: Year-End Demand Sets New Growth Momentum

The World Container Index (WCI) by maritime research consultancy Drewry rose 1% over the past week, reaching $2,213 per 40-foot container (FEU). This marks the fourth consecutive week of positive growth for the index. The momentum for this rise is primarily driven by higher freight rates on vital trade lanes: the Transpacific and Asia-Europe.

Asia-Europe Continues to Lead the Charge

Specifically, spot rates from Shanghai to Genoa climbed 3%, reaching $3,427/container. Meanwhile, rates from Shanghai to Rotterdam also increased by 2%, rising to $2,584. Thus, spot rates on the Asia-Europe lane have now remained stable or grown for four consecutive weeks.

New Seasonal Patterns and Pre-Lunar New Year Outlook

Drewry attributes the current market strength to a shift in seasonal patterns. For the past three years, December has consistently witnessed double-digit month-on-month (MoM) demand growth, reinforcing the view that strong year-end cargo volumes are becoming a "new normal."

Additionally, carriers are recording early bookings ahead of the Lunar New Year, which falls in February 2026. Consequently, Drewry forecasts that freight rates will continue to edge up slightly in the coming week.

Transpacific Stability

Regarding the Transpacific lane, spot rates from Shanghai to New York and Los Angeles remained unchanged this week, following double-digit gains recorded last week. Drewry forecasts that rates on this route will remain stable in the upcoming week.
