Global Container Freight Rates Face Renewed Upward Pressure
.webp)
The global container shipping market is showing signs that a new freight rate upcycle may be emerging, as a combination of supply chain disruptions continues to constrain effective transport capacity and gradually shift market leverage back toward ocean carriers.
Industry experts believe that if current pressures persist or intensify, shippers could face higher freight rates across major trade lanes, echoing market conditions experienced during the peak disruptions of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Growing Pressure on Global Supply Chains
According to Jacob van Rensburg, Head of Research and Development at the South African Association of Freight Forwarders, market dynamics are increasingly moving in favor of container shipping lines as pressure on global supply chains begins to build again.
He noted that over most of the past 22 quarters, carrier profitability has tended to move in tandem with the Global Supply Chain Pressure Index (GSCPI). Current market indicators suggest that this relationship may be re-emerging, as a range of disruptive factors continues to reduce available shipping capacity and support higher freight rate levels.
Multiple Factors Are Simultaneously Constraining Shipping Capacity
Market analysts point to several factors that are collectively impacting global container shipping capacity.
The ongoing diversion of vessels away from the Red Sea via the Cape of Good Hope continues to extend transit times between Asia and Europe, while simultaneously increasing demand for vessel and container capacity.
In addition, tensions between the United States and Iran continue to elevate risks to maritime operations in the Strait of Hormuz. Meanwhile, fluctuating water levels at the Panama Canal have periodically affected vessel transit capacity through the waterway.
Beyond these external challenges, shipping capacity is also being influenced by carriers’ own capacity management strategies. Measures such as blank sailings, service network optimization, and adjustments to vessel deployment remain widely used to control market supply.
Market Indicators Signal Potential Freight Rate Increases
Following a period of uneven market performance throughout 2025, both the Drewry World Container Index (WCI) and the Global Supply Chain Pressure Index (GSCPI) have begun trending upward.
According to analysts, the simultaneous increase in both indicators suggests that the market may be entering a phase of tighter shipping capacity, creating favorable conditions for freight rate increases across key trade routes.
Shippers Face Rising Logistics Costs
For importers and exporters - particularly those in India - the impact of these developments is already becoming more apparent.
Transportation costs on Asia–Europe and Trans-Pacific trade lanes have been trending upward. At the same time, carriers continue to impose or increase a range of surcharges, including War Risk Surcharges (WRS), Fuel Recovery Charges (FRC), and Congestion Surcharges.
Meanwhile, space constraints have started to emerge on certain services, particularly those serving India’s West Coast and Northern India regions.
Strait of Hormuz: A Systemic Risk to Global Supply Chains
One of the most significant concerns facing the market today is the possibility of prolonged restrictions or disruptions to maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz.
Industry experts warn that, should such a scenario materialize, the impact on global transportation capacity could surpass that of the Red Sea crisis in terms of the volume of cargo and trade flows affected.
The Strait of Hormuz currently handles approximately 20% of global oil shipments and serves as a critical transportation corridor for liquefied natural gas (LNG) and dry bulk commodities.
Any prolonged disruption in the region could trigger far-reaching ripple effects across global supply chains, energy markets, and international freight rates, extending well beyond the container shipping sector alone.
