HMM 2025: Maintaining 'Solid' Margins Amidst Rate Plunge and Oversupply Pressure

South Korea’s HMM has announced its 2025 financial results, reporting stable profits despite a severe decline in global freight rates and weakening market conditions.

Financial Snapshot: Lower Profits but Healthy Margins

Over the past year, the company recorded revenue of KRW 10.9 trillion, an operating profit of KRW 1.46 trillion, and a net profit of KRW 1.88 trillion. Notably, the operating margin stood at 13.4%, reflecting solid profitability in a challenging environment.

However, compared to the previous year (year-on-year), full-year results show a distinct decline:

•    Revenue: Down 6.9% from 2024.

•    Operating Profit: Plunged 58.4%.

•    Net Profit: Fell 50.3%.

Freight Market Plunge

The shipping market remained under heavy pressure throughout 2025. The Shanghai Containerized Freight Index (SCFI) averaged 1,581 points, down 37% from 2024.

Freight rates dropped sharply on arterial trade lanes:

•    US West Coast: Down 49%.

•    US East Coast: Down 42%.

•    Europe: Down 49%.

Second-Half Recovery

Despite the general downturn, HMM improved its operational performance in the second half of the year.

•    In Q3, operating profit rose 6.9% quarter-on-quarter, with an operating margin of 11.7%.

•    In Q4 2025, revenue reached KRW 2.7 trillion, while operating profit continued to rise 6.9% compared to Q3.

Strategy to Counter Tonnage Oversupply

Looking ahead, HMM forecasts continued pressure from vessel oversupply, as new container ship deliveries outpace demand growth.

To respond, the company plans to expand its network using a hub-and-spoke model, enhance low-emission services, and optimize feeder operations to improve cost efficiency.

In the bulk segment, HMM aims to drive stable growth by diversifying its portfolio and developing new business opportunities.
