MSC Merges West Africa and Red Sea Services to Optimize Network Operations

Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) has announced plans to merge its West Mediterranean - West Africa and West Mediterranean - Red Sea services into a unified shipping route. The restructuring is designed to strengthen connectivity between Europe, West Africa, and the Red Sea while improving fleet utilization and operational efficiency.

Optimizing Operations and Expanding Network Connectivity

According to MSC, the new service structure has been developed to improve fleet deployment while maintaining direct connections across key markets.

By combining the two existing services, the carrier aims to streamline operations and expand port coverage within a single rotation, providing customers with greater routing flexibility and broader service options.

The new service will call at the following ports:

Valencia – Barcelona – Tanger Med – Abidjan – Tema – Lomé – Takoradi – Abidjan – Douala – Kribi – Pointe-Noire – Matadi – Pointe-Noire – Takoradi – Jeddah – Aqaba – Valencia.

The revamped network will connect major transshipment and export hubs in the Western Mediterranean with key trade gateways across West Africa, Central Africa, and the Red Sea. The service is designed to accommodate a diverse range of cargo, including consumer goods, industrial products, and agricultural exports.

Greater Routing Flexibility for Customers

The integration of the two services is expected to enhance network efficiency while offering customers a wider range of routing options between Africa, Europe, and the Middle East.

The new operating model will also reduce overlap between the previous services, enabling MSC to optimize fleet utilization and improve overall operational performance.

As the global container shipping market continues to evolve, carriers are increasingly restructuring their service networks to adapt to shifting cargo flows, improve operational efficiency, and better meet customer demand.

Service consolidation has become an increasingly common strategy across the container shipping industry, allowing carriers to maximize vessel utilization while maintaining broad coverage across major international trade lanes.
