Maersk Revises Emergency Contingency Surcharge (ECS) for Shipments via Oman and UAE Transshipment Hubs

Maersk has announced an adjustment to its Emergency Contingency Surcharge (ECS) for export cargo routed through its Middle East transshipment hubs, including Salalah and Sohar in Oman, as well as Fujairah and Khor Fakkan in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), destined for a wide range of international markets.

Effective Date and Notice Requirements

The revised ECS tariff will take effect on 1 August 2026.

For trade lanes not regulated by the U.S. Federal Maritime Commission (FMC), the surcharge will be applied based on the Price Calculation Date (PCD).

For markets subject to specific regulatory requirements, Maersk will observe the following advance notice periods:

●    30 days for FMC-regulated trades, including shipments involving the United States, American Samoa, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, Taiwan, and Colombia.

●    15 days for shipments involving Vietnam.

Applicable Across Key International Trade Lanes

The revised ECS will apply to cargo shipped from Maersk's transshipment hubs in Oman and the UAE to several major global trade lanes, including:

●    Northern Europe

●    The Mediterranean

●    West Coast South America

●    The Caribbean

●    Central America

●    East Coast South America

●    South Africa

According to Maersk, the surcharge will vary depending on the port of origin, destination, and container type. Shipments originating from Sohar, Fujairah, and Khor Fakkan will be subject to higher ECS levels than those departing from Salalah.

Depending on the trade lane and equipment type, the ECS will range from USD 2,800 per 20-foot dry container to USD 7,700 per 20-foot reefer container.

Maersk also noted that the implementation of the ECS will continue to comply with applicable regulatory notice requirements and the terms and conditions of its prevailing tariff schedules.
