Maersk Introduces Low Water Surcharge (LWC) on Europe–Canada Trade

Maersk has announced the introduction of a Low Water Surcharge (LWC) for cargo shipped from Europe to the Canadian ports of Montreal and Halifax. The new surcharge will take effect on August 1, 2026, and will remain in force until further notice.

Applicable Surcharge Levels

The LWC will apply to cargo destined for, or transshipped via, the following ports:

●    Port of Montreal (CAMON)

●    Port of Halifax (CAHAL)

The surcharge rates are as follows:

●    US$150 per 20-foot container (20ft)

●    US$300 per 40-foot container (40ft) and 45-foot container (45ft)

Scope of Application

The surcharge applies to shipments originating from Maersk's European trade network, including:

●    European Union (EU) member states

●    United Kingdom

●    Norway

●    Türkiye

●    Israel

●    Egypt

●    Other markets served within Maersk's European network

Applicable to All Booking Types

According to Maersk, the Low Water Surcharge applies to both SPOT bookings and contract (non-SPOT) bookings.

The applicable surcharge will be determined based on the Price Calculation Date (PCD) or the vessel departure date, depending on the booking terms and conditions.

Maersk stated that the surcharge will remain in effect until a revised notice is issued, subject to changes in operating conditions on the Europe–Canada trade lane.
